We had a small team of 5 people and we worked on the clinic in Chalmeca that we are partnering with in our Medical Outreach. We painted, put in new windows, cleaned and did general maintenance. We are trying in our ongoing effort towards sustainability to partner and work with this existing clinic. The clinic needs a new roof and electrical work and we hope to complete this next winter.

We also helped in the training of 9 new Health Guardians for a total of 22 now working in the villages where we have been doing Medical outreach.

We visited our new school in Nuevas Delicias and it looks wonderful. It was very special to see children in school in their new classroom.

We are planning our Fall medical trip October 3-10. We continue to change, grow and learn. We have learned that a once a year outreach does not begin to address our medical concerns nor move us towards sustainability. We are planning on working with the existing clinic in Chalmeca and the Health Guardians as we set up our medical clinics in 2 or 3 villages in centrally accessible locations.

Again, we are trying to find and hire a doctor to work in the clinic in Chalmeca for a year to see if this can lead to some sustainability. We have begun to buy many of the medicines that are needed in Honduras. Our outreach continues to adapt and change as we see the need.

We continue to work to make a difference in the lives of these people that we have grown to love and care for so much. Generous support has come in all of our efforts from the community of St. John’s and for that we are eternally grateful.

The Cowboy Ball - March 7

We had a very, very successful fundraiser in large part due to the tireless efforts of Kelly Butler who has taken on this fundraiser for the past 3 years. Every year it gets better and this year was truly amazing and lots of fun!!

We danced all night to the wonderful music of Walker Williams and his band. We had a very interesting and fabulous silent auction featuring “cowboy/cowgirl" items and some Honduran items. Everyone very generously supported “Summit in Honduras” and had a great time. We are already planning next years “Cowboy Ball” and have secured the Silverthorne Pavilion and booked Walker Williams again. We had a very busy trip as we began on Sunday and the official school dedication was on Friday. We had lots to do and not a lot of time.

The town all chipped in and helped us painted the inside and outside of the school room and built bookcases. We knew after building the simple bookcase that we were in over our heads and found a local carpenter to build all of the desks and chairs.

We were still all painting on Friday hours from the dedication and the fiesta the town had planned. We managed to finish and clean up just minutes before the ceremony was due to begin. Officials from the town and local government and an official from the department of education came to the dedication and it was a wonderful day in spite of the rain. We had gotten a big red dog piñata and stuffed it with toys and sweets and it was quite a sight with all the children sharing in all of the fun.

Nuevas Delicias asked us to help them to give all of their children an education. We helped by supplying the materials and they built their school. Nuevas Delicias wants a better life for their children and is willing to ask for help but also very willing to work towards their goals.

Fall Medical Trip - September 23 to October 1

We had a team composed of 19 medical and support staff from the United States, 2 additional Honduran translators and a Honduran Dentist and assistant for a total of 22 people. We had a difficult trip with lots of challenges. We set up and ran clinics in Bario Suyapa (a very poor area of La Entrada), Nuevas Delicas, El Cedral, La Laguna and El Carmen. We worked non stop for 5 straight days and saw 850 people and we were completely exhausted and depleted.
We learned quite a bit (yet again on that huge learning curve) that smaller is better and that we need to partner more and work through existing health care facilities near the villages we serve particularly the clinic we are partnering with in Chalmeca. We need to work with and continue training our Health Care Guardians in the villages that we serve. It would certainly be a better use of time, talent and resources and most certainly go a long way towards our goal of sustainability.

We have taken all that we have learned and are trying to grow and adapt to making our medical missions more user friendly and tap into the resources that we already have in place. Although we struggled at times and we learned so much and we will grow and change and make our outreach better.

Overnight at Francie's Cabin, Friday August 15th

Overnight at Francie's Cabin is on Friday, August 15th

There will be a group going up at 11:00am, one at 5:30pm, and one later if needed. We would like everyone to try and get up in the first two groups to avoid nighttime hiking. it makes it so much easier than wheeled suitcases and may be used as a carry on.

When you begin to pack, put everything you think you will need for the trip on your bed. Now, randomly throw half of it on the floor. PACK WHAT IS LEFT ON THE BED.

SOME GUIDELINES FOR PACKING

Under-pack
You will be carrying the luggage. Your backpack should weigh under 50 lbs. Have everything that you need. Laundry services are available at the hotel.
Pack cottons or quick dry clothing.
They can be washed out at night.
Cotton is good because it breathes in the Honduras heat.
Dress attire: pants and shirts for the men with one nice pair of pants and shirt for men and a dress or skirt and top for women to go out to dinner or a church service. Very casual attire!! Longer skirts or capris for women. NO SHORTS!!

Pack some soap to wash out laundry and some plastic bags.
Try to bring shampoo and other liquids in 3 oz. bottles.
Plenty of insect repellent and sunscreen.
Comfortable shoes: running shoes, closed toe sandals and flip flops.
The electric is the same current as the U.S. but I suggest not bringing hair dryers etc. The electricity is subject to outages and not reliable.

MONEY

Bring small denominations ($20 bills) to change into Limpera. Big bills are hard to change and we do not have access to a bank. We will change money at the airport in San Pedro Sula. There are ATM machines at La Entrada where we will be staying but these can also be unreliable.
A money belt is a good idea.

CAMERA AND FILM

Make sure you have lots of batteries and if you are using a camera with film, bring lots of film. Disposable cameras are a good idea. The ideal is a digital camera. We will be sending a newsletter home to family and friends and would love to be able to download pictures and include them with the newsletter.

SMALL ALARM CLOCK

A small battery operated alarm clock is a good idea. In rural Honduras, the roosters are pretty good about honoring your request for an early wake up call. The problem is that it is usually a bit earlier than you would like.

GENERAL SAFETY IDEAS

Gang violence has escalated in the big cities. We are not affected in rural Honduras but there are general safety guidelines that need to be observed. Stay in a group and do not go out at night except in a group. Do not go out alone, ever.
Do not carry a lot of money.
Take no jewelry with you. A Timex watch will work perfectly.
Take one credit card.
Be aware of your surroundings.
Essentially, act just like you would in any major metropolitan area.
USE COMMON SENSE. USE GOOD JUDGEMENT.
The people of Honduras are extremely protective of us. We are there to help.

HEALTH ISSUES

PHARMACIES
Don't bring a ton of over the counter items. Honduran pharmacies are well stocked. Check to make sure your health insurance plan covers care in Honduras. We will have supplemental insurance through the Episcopal Church.
Diarrhea. If you experience this, give it 24 hours. Plenty of clear liquids, hydrate, hydrate, hydrate and eat plain toast or rice. If it continues beyond 24 hours, you will need a prescription anti-biotic.

Sunscreen and bug repellent are essential!!!!!!

EXTRAS

Laundry services are available at the hotel. They are reliable and inexpensive. They come back the same day.

Showers: the hot and cold are usually reversed.
Toilets: Carry your own toilet paper or tissues. No paper products go in the toilet. The low water pressure and sewer system can not handle waste paper.

SOME MORE STUFF

Keep your baggage claim tickets; all baggage is checked in San Pedro Sula against claim tickets.

Do not throw out the yellow piece of paper that is put into your passport when you arrive. You will need to show it when you leave the country.

Have a copy of your passport with you at all times.

Put aside somewhere safe exit money to pay when you leave the country; in limpera or dollars. It was most recently $35.

If you have prescription or over the counter medications keep them in the original package or bottle. Leave copies of your itinerary and passport with family or friends so you may be contacted in case of an emergency. We will have cell phones with us that work in Honduras and we will leave those numbers with you to pass on.

Team Meeting Schedule for 2008 Mission (Sept 23 - Oct 5)

SUMMIT IN HONDURAS
I will be out of town for the next 5 weeks in Honduras and Patti will join me a little later. We will be studying Spanish and working. Karen is still here and will have the next meeting on June 22. These are all important meetings and it is very important for you to be there at the meetings. We need to have deposits by the next meeting as we are going to book our plane reservations and need a deposit. If this is a problem please let one of us know and we will work with you. There will be a personal fund raising letter on the blog in the next day or two. You can download it and make it personal to you. It has been very effective in the past. We have many fund raisers and ideas for fund raisers that we will talk about at the next meeting. Please bring any ideas that you have. We have a fundraiser for the school building project on July 22 at the Senior center in Frisco and we could use your help. More at the meeting.

We are trying to reduce the use of paper and are trying to use the blog as our information source. Please be patient with us we are on a huge learning curve, especially me.

We are going to have an amazing trip and we already have an amazing team. I will stay in touch while in Honduras.

Thank you for being a part of Summit in Honduras, we are and will make a difference.

Maggie

Fall Medical Trip FULL

The Fall medical trip to Honduras with Summit in Honduras is full.

We appreciate all the interest we have received.

We have many more trips planned both medical and construction and would love to have you be a apart of Summit in Honduras.

Keep checking the blog for more information about upcoming trips and how you can be involved.

Mission Meeting Sunday, May 18

The next mission meeting is to be held this Sunday, May 18 at St. John's parish hall at 6pm, the corner of French and Lincoln in Breckenridge. Our last day on Monday it was 105 degrees so to come home to Colorado and 25 degree weather was a bit of a shock. Padre Juan Jose said he would like to visit Summit county and be cold and see snow but just for one day!

It was an amazing trip. The team was equally amazing. All of our lives have been changed in some way by the experiences that we all had. I think we will all look at the world a little bit differently. We touched many people and were touched by many. We did make a difference just by being there and showing that we care. Everyone put their heart and soul into everything that they did. We didn't finish the wall we were building but we got a good start. It is going to be a long, arduous process and progress is slow and we did see progress.

My heart has been filled and I am humbles to be with all of the people on our team and see their compassion and caring. The world can be a better place and all it takes is one person at a time or in our case 10 people at a time working together.

Maggie

Last day in Honduras, April 7

Our last full day in Honduras, and many of us are amazed at how quickly the trip flew by. After such a rocky road up to the small village of El Incondita, the road to El Zarzel seemed very smooth! It was nice to drive back to El Zarzel after 2 days away- it was almost as if we had new eyes as we noticed more things along the way. We arrived just after 10am to see some villagers already working on the cement and rocks. Pedro carefully measured and made sure we were on track with the level and other tools, and then we were able to build more onto the foundation of the wall. We spent the majority of our day making trips to gather rocks (there were two workers in the rock field mining the rocks), unloading them, and then making the lower wall. It was interesting seeing Mizael and Pedro´s technique´s using the cement and the rocks- they are true artists! Since cement is so expensive, they really utilize the rocks to secure the walls. Dorothy, Catherine and Lindsay went up to the local school with a few more supplies and to give them some Keystone hats. Altogether it was a great last day to a fantastic trip. It´s truly hard to put everything into words. I guess all I can really say is that I feel so blessed to be here. Honduras is amazing. We´ve made strong connections with many people here (not just Juan Jose, Pedro and Mizael but the villagers in El Zarzel, too). Life has been very, very busy. We finished a long hard day in El Zarzel on Friday. We worked all day in very hot sun hauling rocks, mixing cement and in general putting up the wall for the church. It is very labor intensive. We worked until late in the afternoon and came back to the Hotel to cold beers and dinner. Not much happens after dinner because we are so tired. We visited the school on Friday. It is horribly overcrowded and they need to add on to it. The two male teachers are very good and very dedicated. There are about 100 children in the village and most go to school. School is divided into 2 classrooms and have grades 1 through 3 in one classroom and 4 through 6 in the other classroom. There is a feeding program in the village for the children and I think it is through US Aid. Different women in the village take turns and are paid to cook food for all the children. At lunch time, all the children line up with a bowl outside the house to receive, for many, their only meal of the day. It is an incredibly beautiful place and incredibly poor. The team has been wonderful, working tirelessly.

Patti took a dear Honduran friend, Pedro, to a clinic Friday in Santa Rosa with a translator He has been sick and we all love him. He has a hernia and needs surgery. We will work on seeing how we can get it done for him.
It was early to bed.

Saturday

The team, minus Maggie, Patti and Don, went to Copan for the day to see the ruins. Don met with a man at the radio station to talk about the village we are visiting on Sunday who are very, very remote and want to have education for their children on the radio. We got a lot of information but some of it was very confusing. We will try to get more information on Monday.
Maggie and Patti met with a social worker who came up from Tegucigalpa and worked on identifying and training Health Guardians and working with our September Medical team.
Everyone met up at the Hotel late afternoon and we had very heavy rains and power outages. We went to a great place for dinner. We are getting adventuresome as we always eat at the hotel.

Sunday

No one got sick from our meal last night, yeah!!
We drove 2 1/2 hours to El Encontidito on the border of Guatemala. It was quite an adventure. and very, very remote over some of the toughest roads I have ever seen or driven on. Patti, Corey and Maggie had the pleasure of navigating the roads. Whew!!
We are back safe and somewhat sound.
There are only 10 homes but each home has 10 to 12 children so there are a lot of children. We walked down the hillside to a river and trossed it and were in Guatemala. It was very touching to have a church service in the small half finished church that they are building.
We are finishing up at El Zarael tomorrow and I think we will be sad to leave especially since it will not be finished when we leave.

Pictures From Honduras

Top: The group shot was taken by Lindsey near the local grad school (Dorothy has short hair, Catherine is the young girl and the older male is our teacher translator for today, Kelvin).

Bottom: Trying out rebar for some columns.

Day Number 3

Day 3

We got a Honduran start to the day, meaning a late start after a visit to the hardware store, grocery and bank. Padre Juan Jose had a flat tire so we all went ahead and got started on continuing our wall project. We have spent Wednesday digging ditches for the wall, making and filling the ditches with cement and rocks, making rebar columns and building the wall.
We are all very tired. We made many trips to the river for water as they have not had water for a week in El Zarzel and we had two men digging out rocks that we collected a few times today. It has been an adventure. This is an great team and everyone is working very hard toget this project completed. The children are entranced by our young people (Lindsey, Catherine, Corey and our student translators) We have taught them Frisbee, Hackey Sac, and jump rope.

From Catherine:
The Sun prevailed today, although the cool breeze did as well. The construction of the fence is well underway, and everything has been secured with rocks and cement. Our team has continued to work closely with the townspeople and overall we have come to know many of the individuals well through working with them. I have come to learn that the children love bracelets, nail polish and jump ropes as well as digital cameras and seeing their printed pictures among others.

Dorothy said:
Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwiches are the best lunch ever!

More tomorrow. . . .

First Day In Honduras

This evening concludes our first day in Honduras, as well as my first day on a mission trip. After the introductory ride up the rocky slope to El Zarael, we began to work on the fence that is to suround the Church building. While my Spanish can be a challenge to understand, I have found through the duration of the day, that communicating with the people is not difficult. My favorite observation, however, has been that relating to the involvemant of the community. As our group was working ,many local people joined the effort. This above all was encouraging and rewarding.
(Catherine is a freshman in high school)
It was an amazing day with an amazing group of people, team and town. I will also forward you the application and tentative time schedule. We would love to have you be a part of this fall's team. Please share this information with anyone who you might think would be interested. We will look forward to hearing from you and hopefully seeing you all soon.

Thank you for all that you have done for Summit in Honduras,

Maggie

We will be putting up informational posters up about the April meeting, if you would like one to post let us know and we can get one to you.

SUMMIT IN HONDURAS

April 1-8, 2008 small construction trip

Sept. 24-Oct. 1, 2008 medical trip

October 2-4, Conference on Honduras

in Copan Ruinas

Travel Tips

IMMUNIZATIONS
Be sure to check with your physician. These recommendations have been used by our group for the last three trips.
Preventative Malaria Medication
We will provide pills from Honduras at no charge. Start with 2 pills one week before travel. Continue weekly through visit and 4 weeks after return.
Hepatitis A & B Vaccination
Check with your physician or county health department.
Typhoid Vaccination
Innoculation or Oral Vaccine. Good for 5 years.
Tetanus Booster Shot
If you haven’t had one in last 10 years

PACKING
Use backpacks-it makes it so much easier than wheeled suitcases and may be used as carry on, if necessary. When you begin to pack, put everything you think you will need for the trip on your bed. Now, randomly throw half of it onto the floor. PACK WHAT IS LEFT ON THE BED.
SOME GUIDELINES FOR PACKING
Under-pack since you will be carrying the luggage. Your backpack should weigh under 50 lbs. Have everything that you need. Laundry services are available at the hotel. If you are traveling with someone, pack half of each person’s things into each back pack. That way if one of the bags doesn’t show up in San Pedro Sula, the trip proceeds on schedule. Pack cottons or quick dry clothing. They can be washed out at night. Cotton is good because it breathes in the Honduras heat.
Dress/attire
Pants and shirts for the men with one nice pair of pants and shirt for men and a dress or skirt and top for women to go out to dinner or a church service. Very casual attire!! Longer skirts or capris for women. NO SHORTS!! Pack some soap to wash out laundry and some plastic bags. Try to bring shampoo and other liquids in 3 oz. bottles. Plenty of insect repellent and sunscreen
Comfortable footwear Running shoes, closed toe sandals and flip flops The electric is the same current as the U.S. but I suggest not bringing hair dryers, etc. The electricity is subject to outages and not reliable.
MONEY
Bring small denominations ($20 bills) to change into Limpera. Big bills are hard to change and we do not have access to a bank. We will change money in Honduras. There are ATM machines at La Entrada where we will be staying but these can also be unreliable. A money belt is a good idea.
CAMERA AND FILM
Make sure you have lots of batteries and if you are using a camera with film, lots of film. Disposable cameras are a good idea. The ideal is a digital camera. We will be sending a newsletter home to family and friends and would love to be able to download pictures and include them with the newsletter.
SMALL ALARM CLOCK
A small battery operated alarm clock is a good idea. In rural Honduras the roosters are pretty good about honoring your request for an early wake up call.

Don’t bring a ton of over the counter items. Honduran pharmacies are well stocked and well stocked. Check to make sure your health insurance plan covers care in Honduras. We will have supplemental insurance through the Episcopal Church. Diarrhea If you experience, give it 24 hours. Plenty of clear liquids, hydrate, hydrate, hydrate and eat plain toast or rice. If it continues beyond 24 hours, you will need a prescription anti-biotic. Sunscreen and bug repellent are essential!!!!!

Put aside somewhere safe exit money to pay when you leave the country; in lempira or dollars.

Travel Information Form

Summit in Honduras

Thank you for your interest in becoming a member of the Summit in Honduras mission trip.
Each member of the team is a vital part of the mission.

PLEASE PRINT

Full Name ________________________________________________________ (as shown on passport)
Date of birth ___________________ (necessary for airline tickets)
Phone # s______________________ ___________________________
mailing address_______________________________________________________________________
Email_________________________________________________________
Emergency contact name _________________________________________
Emergency contact number ________________________________________

Travel insurance _________ (Would you like to purchase $25 travel insurance? We’ve been very busy and finding internet when we do have time is a challenge. Our scribe wrote this two days ago and we’re just now getting it to you.

It’s Sunday and for many of us, our time here is drawing short. For the most part, we have been very busy with not a lot of extra time. The medical team has really come together and because of that we’ve been able to treat some amazing numbers.

Thursday, our first day of clinics in the smaller city of Sula, we ended up treating 118 patients rather than the 80 we had estimated at lunchtime. On Friday we stayed even closer to home, setting up in a school in a barrio of La Entrada, only a few minutes from our hotel. Our wonderful medical team was able to see over 190 patients that day. Even though the drive was short, it was a very exhausting day. The sheer numbers of people waiting can get daunting.

Each day we have had four students from the Bilingual School who have been valuable in the clinics. These kids, some as young as 10 or 11, meet us at the hotel by 8 every morning and translate for us all day long. We never get back much before 5. They even put up with our peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for lunch, not a favorite Latino delicacy. Without their help, we couldn’t accomplish anywhere near as much as we’ve been doing.

Saturday we got out in the countryside and we were amazed by the beauty of the area. The hills were very green and lush and it was a relief to be in a more rural setting. We drove over an hour to the small village of Nueva Delicias. It is situated in a valley next to a river. A mission group from Baton Rouge has recently repaired a small suspension bridge over the river, but it is only supposed to be for foot traffic. Maggie had warned us that if the river was too high, we might have to carry all our many duffels and footlockers in. I was in Greg’s SUV leading the pack when we got to the river. After watching some boys wading across with their bikes, we decided we could do it and all 5 vehicles four wheeled our way over. No problemo! We set up in a very small church. All the intakes and assessments as well as the lab work were done outside in front of the church. The locals set up a couple of tarps for us and it was quite pleasant. Head lice were a problem here, but water was plentiful, so Maggie, Gabrielle and Jan set up a shampoo salon that they expanded to include conditioner, hair accessories and even nail polish. The medical team treated over 150 people.

Sunday we split into two groups, medical and non medical. The clinic was to be held in a very small facility in the rural village of Los Mayos with no room for additional people. Unfortunately one of the medical team’s SUVs had a flat tire on the dirt road. Nothing about changing the flat was easy, and by the time things were fixed in the rain, everyone was wet and muddy. It was very late with a chance that the rain would make the road impassible, so the team returned home. We will try to get at least part of the team up to the village tomorrow.

The non medical group was going off for a day of sightseeing at the Mayan ruins in Copan, the main tourist attraction of Honduras, about an hour away. We had rain on the way to Copan, but just a little drizzle once we got to the ruins. The overcast kept the temperatures down and we had a wonderful guide. After our 2 hour tour we had lunch and did a little souvenir shopping in Copan before heading back. This is the town where some of our group will be attending the Conference on Honduras next week.

This evening (Sunday) our Reverend Christy and Father Juan Jose, one of the priests we’ve been working with, are jointly celebrating a mass at the church in Chalmeca, the town of Monday’s clinic. After that we’re having a late dinner and plan for the next few days. We’re all doing well and finding our work very rewarding.

The Scribes for Summit in Honduras

Meeting of September 24th, 5:30 PM

Present at the meeting were Krista, Greg, Christy, Gail, Dick, Jan, Sandy, Sue, Mary, Gabrielle, Maggie, Terese, Terry, Lyn and Ellie.

We were each given 2 malaria pills to take in the next week. Then we will all take 2 during the week we are in Honduras and we will each continue to take 2 pills a week for 4 weeks after we return. Those staying later for the conference will be getting an extra week's worth of pills.

We were all given goody bags which include bandannas, water bottles, vitamin C, lanyards and small hand sanitisers which will be refilled while we are there. We all need to wear some kind of a hat, both for the sun and because many of the people have head lice which we don't want to catch. Pepto Bismol will be passed out every morning and noon before eating.

Brook will be in charge of arranging the carpools. Gabrielle, Mary, Lyn, Gail and Ellie have all volunteered to drive. As each person will be taking 2 duffels to check, no one felt they could take more than 2 passengers each. Anyone who has not given Maggie a copy of his/her passport picture page should give it to Brook at the airport. An additional copy should be carried by the individual out in the field with the passport itself staying at the hotel.

Greg and Maggie will be emailing us with the duffel bag assignments. All duffels are numbered and each person is responsible for picking up their bags, checking them at the airport through to San Pedro Sula and making sure they arrive safely. Any of the larger liquids as well as any liquids not needed for the night in Houston should be packed in a baggie in one of your assigned duffels. We will only have our carry on backpacks for our night in Houston. When entering Honduras, be sure to check pleasure, not business, on the entry form.

We will be changing our money in the Houston airport Wednesday morning. The exit fee of $35 to leave Honduras can be paid in either US or local currency. We will probably not be going sightseeing on Sunday afternoon, but will hopefully have a chance to go to the native market in San Pedro Sula the day before leaving.

Jobs were assigned for while in country, though we should all be flexible and may be doing many other jobs too. Medical people were given scrubs of two bottoms and one top, though the tops are to be saved for emergencies with t-shirts or tank tops being worn with the scrub bottoms. The non-medical job assignments are:
Foot Washing - Maggie, Terese
Hand Washing - Dick, Terry
Tooth Brushing - Sandy, Jan
Camera Outreach - Terry, Dick
Community Assessment -
Communications - Ellie, Terry, Jan

Greg will be emailing us asking for email addresses of those we'd like to have sent the group emails. We will send these to Sally who will send them off to those on the list. They will probably come about every other day. Our Complete Travel Plans, published on the blog site today, gives all the contact information for those needing to get hold of us.

Our yard sale made $3,000. We were overwhelmed by the generosity of the community. More than medicines, the purpose of our trip is to connect with the people and show them that we care. During lulls in the day we should go meet the villagers, play with the kids, visit their homes and show that we care. We should always ask permission before taking pictures. For chronic health issues, we hope to leave enough medicine to last about 3 months until the next group goes down.

Towels are on our list, but the hotel does supply one towel per person. No washcloths or pool towels are provided, so a microfiber towel for the pool may be in order as well as a washcloth if you use one.

Our Complete Travel Plans

With the exception of Greg, Maggie and Patti the team is leaving Tuesday October 2
Continental 1408 Denver-Houston 6:05 arrive Houston 9:26
Stay at Country Suites: 281-987-2400
October 3
Continental 762 Houston-San Pedro Sula 9:10 arrive 11:03
San Pedro Sula to La Entrada
Hotel San Carlos October 3-9
504-661-2377
While we are in La Entrada we will be working in Sula, La Entrada, Brissas de Chalemecon, Neuvas Delicious, Los Mayas and Chalamanca
October 9 we will be back in San Pedro Sula
La Cordillera
504-556-6116
Continental Flight 763 San Pedro Sula-Houston 11:52 arrive 3:44
Continental Flight 399 Houston-Denver 5:55 arrive 7:33

Greg, Maggie, Mary, Allison, Sandy, Christy, and Karen are staying on for conference and coming back to San Pedro Sula on October 14 staying at the Cordillera and departing October 15 same flight info as October 10

We have Honduran cell phones and the numbers are 011-504-9951-2669 or 011-504-9950-5310
You may also call Sally at the church office at 970-453-4264

Our Medical Supplies

As of this latest inventory we are doing well on all meds except the following few items:

Children's Tylenol Elixir - need 50 bottles
Children's Ibuprofen Elixir- need 50 bottles
Infant Tylenol drops- need 20 bottles
Hydrocortisone cream 1%- need 50 tubes
Antacid tablets- need A LOT!! It will be a Greek theme. Bring appetizers and side dishes as well as a $20 donation. The main dish, dessert and drinks will be furnished. Invite lots of friends and RSVP to Brook.

Yard Sale
It will be on Sunday 9/23 at the High Country Health Care parking lot in Silverthorne behind Wendy's 9-3. Sign ups for helping Sat. afternoon and Sun. were passed around, but let Robin know if you can help. Lots of help is needed both days. Items can be dropped off at Lyn's, 1325 Palmers Drive, Silverthorne, 468-6549, ahead of time, as she is just up the street. Fliers were distributed.

Hurricane Felix
The hurricane dissipated as it moved inland, but our area is where it settled. There was flooding in LaEntrada and some houses were washed away. Also some of the mountain roads have been washed away. Everyone should add a pair of jeans and work gloves to their personal equipment list. Because of all the rain we should expect lots of bugs and mosquitoes, making DEET bug repellent even more essential to prevent malaria and dengue fever.

Spanish Intensive Course
8 of our group attended along with 5 from Father Dyer's Guatemala mission. It was very well received.

Trip Logistics
Everyone will have 2 supply duffels or footlockers to check while personal items go into your backpack as a carry-on. Check the Continental Airlines website for specs on carry-on luggage. You can put your larger liquids into the checked duffel. Our checked bags will be checked through to Honduras, so all your needs for the night in Houston have to be carried with you. There will be a van to take us to and from the hotel in Houston. We will try to arrange carpools down to the Denver airport. Malaria pills will be given out at the meeting on 9/24, with 2 pills to be taken weekly starting before we leave and not ending until one month after our return. We will also be given some worm medicine to take after we return.

We will be split into 2 teams, one will work a rural area and the other a more urban area with the assignments switching every day. Everyone needs a copy of the photo page of his passport. The passport will be left at the hotel while the copy is carried into the field. The rural clinics will usually be at schools, though some of them are open. The non medical personnel will be taking care of the people in line. Last year the mission treated about 400, but hopes to treat close to 1000 this year. We hope to be able to brainstorm some gifts for our translators in addition to cash.

We may try setting up a mock clinic to prepare us. Often decisions need to be made quickly as situations arise, so don't feel bad if you're not consulted each time. We'll probably have a quick group meeting each night before dinner. Some of the OTC needs we still have are baby vitamin drops, children's vitamins of the more chalky, less sweet variety and small tubes of hydrocortizone cream.

Fundraising Yard Sale

We will be holding a yard sale on Sunday Sept. 23, 9am-4pm, to raise money for our mission. It will be in the High Country Health Care parking lot at 265 Tanglewood Lane in Silverthorne. Please go through your homes to see what items you can contribute. Please contact Robin at robinm@HighCountryHealth.com with a list of whatever large items you may have.

We will need help in several areas. Terry has offered to get publicity in the Summit Daily News, but we could also use some fliers and other publicity. Does anyone have access to a pick-up truck to transport the larger items? We will also need help with set-up, sales and clean-up. There is no such thing as too much. Brook is willing to do a Sept. potluck for fundraising purposes. Robin will pursue the idea of a yard sale. Greg passed out fundraising letters sent to the church members which we can reproduce for all our family, friends and acquaintances.

People who made a split payment of expenses need to get their second $500 into the church now, phone 453-4264, send check to PO Box 2166, Breckenridge, CO 80424 or use a credit card online to http://www.stjohnsbreck.org/. Those going to the conference after our mission need to get their $100 registration fee to Maggie.

Maggie asks that we add two water bottles to our personal equipment list, while Greg would like us each to bring a light weight Spanish/English dictionary. We will be changing our money in Houston to avoid notice at the airport. Everyone should put the $35 exit fee in an envelope to be kept separate from their other money. There are 2 ATMs in La Entrada, but travelers checks are useless there.

In Country Jobs
Documentors - Jan
Support Staff - Dick, Terese, Sandy
Correspondent
Public Health - Dick, Jan
We will be breaking into two groups daily with one going to a larger, closer in town and the other going to farther out villages. The groups will flip-flop the next day.

Room Assignments
Dick/Jan; Larry/Karen; Gabrielle/Allison; Jim/Terry/Greg;
Gail/Lin D.; Krista/Jane; Robin/Brook; Susan/Lyn K.;
Ellie/Mary; Maggie/Patti
Changes can be made, just let Maggie know what they are. Also let Maggie know any dietary requests. She has registered us all with the US Embassy. We should each make 2 copies of the picture-number page of our passports, one to Maggie and one to be kept with our stuff but not with the passport. Passports need not be carried out to the field with us. San Pedro Sula is a safer city than Tequcigalpa where a missionary was attacked and killed last week, but even in the smaller city of LaEntrada no one is to go out of the hotel complex alone. The last night where we will stay in San Pedro Sula we will be in a hotel complex that is guarded. We will have our own doctors with us and any perscription type medication that we might need will be readily available with 24 hour pharmacies.

Travel Arrangements
Continental Airlines
Tues. 8/2 Den-Hou 6:05 - 9:26 PM CO1408 Hilton Hotel at Int'l. As always my soul and heart were filled with the joy of these people. It is so reassuring to go back and see people who I know and call friends.
I have been doing a lot of thinking and planning for the October trip and am feeling uncomfortable with the fact that we have yet to be all together as a team. It really struck home working with the team from Baton Rouge last week.
I keep saying and truly mean it that we have an amazing group of very dedicated people going on our team and I desperately want you all to get to know each other. We are going to be working so hard that we will not necessarily have the opportunity while we are on the mission.
We have a meeting next Monday, August 13 at 5:30 in the Parish Hall. I know how incredibly busy all of you are and I would encourage all of you to make an valiant effort to come on Monday. Come early, stay for awhile, leave early, just please come!!!
We have an enormous amount of work to do in the next 2 months. We need to seriously talk about fund raising and involvement. We need to be collecting over the counter medications, reading glasses, flip-flops and many other things. We have a list of jobs that need to be done and will let you choose how you want to be involved. Another incentive to come is that we will assign tasks to those who aren't there if haven't heard from you and you don't indicate a preference.
Last year we held the clinic in one place and this year we are stretching ourselves and working at 6 different locations, many of them in rural, mountain settings. We need to be very, very organized.
I will have lots of information next Monday and will look forward to seeing all of you.
Blessings,
Maggie

OTC Medecines & Baskets

Hello Travelers,
We have baskets ready with lists for collecting over
the counter medications and other needs for our trip
in October. This is a great way to build community
awareness of our project and provides a way for anyone
to help.
Our first two baskets have been placed at High Country
Health's Dillon office (thanks to Robin) and at St.
John's in Breck. She has all the stuff and can
help you while both Maggie and I are out of town this
next week.

Our next meeting will be at St. John's on Monday
August 13 at 5:30 pm.

Thanks for being part of the team!
- Greg Wright
471-1072

Over the Counter Medications & Other Needs

Children’s Ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin) – Infant Drops, Suspension,
Chewable Tablets
Children’s Acetaminophen (Tylenol) – Infant Drops, Suspension,
Chewable Tablets

Children’s Multiple Vitamins – Liquid or Chewable
Adult Multiple Vitamins
Prenatal Vitamins (with iron and folic acid)

Acetaminophen Tablets or Capsules
Ibuprofen Tablets or Capsules

Benadryl Tablets or Liquid
Pseudoephedrine (Sudafed) Tablets or Liquid

Guaifenesin (Mucinex or Robitussin)Tablets or Liquid
Robitussin DM

Hydrocortisone Cream –1%
Bacitracin Ointment
Calamine Lotion
Caladryl Lotion
Benadryl Cream
Lotrimin Cream
Lamisil Cream
Eucerin Cream
Vaseline

Metamucil or FiberCon
Pepto-Bismol Tablets
Imodium AD
Zantac
Prilosec OTC

Sunscreen
Chapstick

Nizoral Shampoo
Nix or Rid

Bandaids – all sizes
Adhesive Tape
ACE wraps

Saline Nasal Spray
Artificial Tears

flip flops
reading glasses
white socks

Meeting of Monday July 16 at 5:30

There were 15 people at the July meeting. There are currently 20 signed up to go on the mission, though there is room for more if they decide to go. Maggie is planning on buying the tickets tomorrow, as the prices are very good at the moment. There was some double checking about who is planning to stay the extra 5 days to go to a post mission conference.

Maggie showed us the malaria pills that will be supplied for all. We are to take them two at a time starting a week before we leave and continuing for four weeks after we get back, a total of six weeks. There was an incidence this year of a group going to Honduras who did not take the malaria pills and some of the group contracted malaria. In addition hepatitis, typhoid and tetanus vaccines are recommended. Also we need to be vigilant about using bug spray because of dengue fever, as well as sunscreen. Maggie says they will have quantities of bug spray and sunscreen available for all.

Greg, Maggie and Christy drove up to Laramie today to talk to the group who built one of the small rural clinics we hope to work out of. Maggie is going to Honduras shortly to buy some land and meet with the Honduran doctor who will be working with us.

Greg has a list of OTC medicines that we should all be trying to get donated. The list will be included on the blog site. There are wicker laundry baskets that can be taken to groups to ask for donations to fill them. We do not want to take toys, but soccer balls, Spanish books, primarily primary level, flip flops and toothbrushes are much needed. Lyn thought she might be able to order some Spanish books through Scholastic Books when they reopen in mid August. Reading glasses of all strengths are desperately needed and we might be able to find some at the Dollar Stores.

Fundraising by way of potluck dinners was discussed. An idea is to ask people to bring $25 and a dish, have the potlucks at various houses. There was talk of a two day intensive Spanish course in August or early September, with quite a few interested in taking it. Christy will be looking into setting it up.

Everyone should plan on taking their personal gear in a carry on backpack, with their 2 bag checked baggage to consist of duffels with the supplies we’re taking. The various personal bottles of liquid, etc. that can’t be carried on will be packed in the duffels. Clothes need to come at least to the top of the knees for the women, though tank tops are okay. For men, shorts are really not accepted by the culture, and light weight, quick dry fabrics are the best. We may have scrubs donated and there is same day laundry service available at the hotel. We may want to donate some of our work clothes at the end. On Sunday we will be going to visit some Mayan ruins with a nice lunch. Summit County casual with $100 spending money should easily suffice for the trip. Sandals are fine, though a pair of closed toed shoes and a windbreaker are recommended.

We will meet again on Monday August 13 at 5:30 at St. John’s. Bring your questions and ideas.

Meeting of Monday June 18 at 5:30 PM

There were 15 people at the meeting including Karen, one of the doctors, and 3 others who also went last year. Half of the $1000. expenses are due by the beginning of July so group airline tickets can be bought while the rates are good, with the rest being due the beginning of August. No one should not go because of funding, and there are many ways to raise money, both individually and as a group.

We will fly into San Pedro Sula, but we will be staying in a hotel in the smaller town of La Entrada. On Tues. 10/2 we fly to Houston where we spend the night, then on to San Pedro Sula about 9:30 Wed. morning. We arrive in the early afternoon, then bus to La Entrada. Thurs. through Sat. are clinics, with some out in the smaller towns. Sun. is a day off where we may go visit some Mayan ruins. Mon. through Tues. are more clinics. Tues. night we bus back to San Pedro Sula where we spend the night before flying home on Wed. 10/10. Some of the people are staying on for a conference through Sat., back to San Pedro Sula on Sun. and flying home Mon. 10/15.

The church will provide health insurance for all that includes being treated at a hospital rather than a clinic and medivacked out if necessary. If your insurance includes these benefits in Honduras, let Maggie or Greg know that you don't need the other. We will have clinics in several small towns, one where we will be working out of a church and the other out of another building. While in La Entrada we will be working out of a clinic.

The non medical people will be doing things like being runners, drivers, health education, providing water for the people waiting in lines, etc. Some of our personal supplies might include head lamps and heavy plastic or metal water bottles. The Summit County Soccer group gives us soccer balls which we distribute through the schools. We should be be asking for donations of toothbrushes from dentists, no toothpaste, slightly used or new baseball hats, children's books in Spanish, white socks, vitamins with expiration dates later than 10/08. We do not take clothing or toys down to give away. Check with Greg or Sally at the church office for a list of those who have already donated.

Some jobs that need to be filled ASAP include fundraising, both for the group and for individuals, communications, publicity and a travel coordinator. Our meals are included, though lunches are often peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. We will change our money at the airport when we arrive and there are ATMs available. Other expenses should be few, with about $150. thought to cover all.

Our next meeting will be on Monday July 16 at 5:30 at St. Johns.

Traveling to Honduras

TRAVEL TO HONDURAS
October 2007

Under-pack
You will be carrying the luggage. Your backpack should weigh under 50 lbs. Have everything that you need. Laundry services are available at the hotel.

Try to bring shampoo and other liquids in
3 oz. bottles.

Plenty of insect repellent and sunscreen

Comfortable footwear
Running shoes, closed toe sandals and flip flops
The electric is the same current as the U.S. but I suggest not bringing hair dryers, etc. The electricity is subject to outages and not reliable.

MONEY
Bring small denominations ($20 bills) to change into Limpera. Big bills are hard to change and we do not have access to a bank. We will change money at the airport in San Pedro Sula. There are ATM machines at La Entrada where we will be staying but these can also be unreliable.
A money belt is a good idea.

CAMERA AND FILM
Make sure you have lots of batteries and if you are using a camera with film, lots of film. Disposable cameras are a good idea. The ideal is a digital camera. We will be sending a newsletter home to family and friends and would love to be able to download pictures and include them with the newsletter.

SMALL ALARM CLOCK
A small battery operated alarm clock is a good idea. In rural Honduras the roosters are pretty good about honoring your request for an early wake up call.

Pharmacies
Don’t bring a ton of over the counter items. Honduran pharmacies are well stocked and well stocked.
Check to make sure your health insurance plan covers care in Honduras. We will have supplemental insurance through the Episcopal Church.

Diarrhea
If you experience, give it 24 hours. Plenty of clear liquids, hydrate, hydrate, hydrate and eat plain toast or rice. If it continues beyond 24 hours, you will need a prescription anti-biotic.

Sunscreen and bug repellent are essential!!!!!

Put aside somewhere safe exit money to pay when you leave the country; in lempira or dollars.

IMMUNIZATIONS
Be sure to check with your physician. These recommendations have been used by our group for the last two trips.

Preventative Malaria Medication
We will provide pills from Honduras at no charge.
